As an English literature major at college, the difference between an A and a B on an essay test was often the amount of trivia you were able to include in your answer, or so we, the students, thought.

Today trivia games and trivia information are very popular. The most famous trivia game, Jeopardy!, began it's 17th syndicated season in the fall of 2000. Conceived by Merv Griffin in 1964, the answer and question game was the number 1 quiz show in America for 769 weeks and currently has an audience of 32 million viewers each week.

In 1979, Chris Hanley and Scott Abbott, both avid Scrabble players, devised Trivial Pursuit, a board game for two to six players (or teams) where each player must answer questions in six categories of knowledge. Additional questions packages are available in 19 languages taking into account local knowledge (such as a British deck with Cricket questions in sports), and special editions, such as Star Wars.

To help pub owners settle debates (and bets) between patrons, the makers of Guinness Ale produced the first Guinness Book of World Records in 1955. Now printed in 20 languages, the millennium edition initial print run of 2.7 million copies will itself be a world record for largest initial print of a color illustrated non-fiction book.
